REFLECTION FOR THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C), Week beginning 17th JULY 2022

On September 25th 1935, Jesus gave the Chaplet of Mercy to Sr. Faustina. It may be prayed on Rosary beads. The words on the 5 “lead” beads are: “Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.”(On each set of the 5 lots of 10 beads, one would then say these accompanying words: “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world)” – this novena can be said at any time. Jesus, however, wished it to begin on Good Friday and be completed on Easter Saturday – the day before the Feast of Divine Mercy, the 2nd Sunday after Easter. He gave her the following instructions on how to make the novena: “During these nine days, I want you to lead souls to the fount of my Mercy, in order that they draw from it strength, refreshment and all the graces they need in the trials of their lives, especially at the hour of death. Each day you will lead a different group of souls and immerse them in the sea of My Mercy – each day you will beseech the Father through My bitter Passion for graces for these souls.” Jesus attached a most singular grace to the Feast of Divine Mercy: those who attend Confession (Reconciliation) and who receive Holy Communion worthily on that set day will obtain complete forgiveness of sins and of punishment appertaining to sins. Going to Confession does not explicitly have to be on that actual day – Sr. Faustina herself made it on the Saturday before. The Feast of Divine Mercy is very closely linked to the great day of our Baptism. We can prepare for it by showing mercy by word or deed to another, or by prayer for others.
